The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most important festivals in China. To celebrate it, the PEAC staff invented their friends to come together and have fun. After two weeks’ preparation, everything was ready, and Mr. Zhang was generous enough to provide us with an activity space. On May 25, PEAC staff members came to the place early, and at 4:30p.m., the guests started to arrive. The members of PEAC had already cooked several amazing dishes, like mango rice, mixed congee, fermented glutinous rice, sticky rice ribs, Chinese rice pudding, pineapple rice, zong leaf harrow, and cake made of sticky rice served cold in the summer.
When the guests arrived, the PEAC staff invited them to join in the fun of wrapping zongzi and making sushi. Some of the guests were of more standing than others , but that day, everybody was alike. All of them participated so enthusiastically that even at dinner time, they still wanted to continue making zongzi and sushi. During the process, the members of PEAC and the guests had many great interactions. One guest was from UNICEF and was very interested in PEAC’s work. She said, “The things you guys do are very meaningful. For example, the popular science corner you have here is very educational, because people don’t know what to trust due to mass media, like how many people think cherry tomatoes are a GMO, but the truth is that they're not. Your people know this area well, and people can actually trust you to tell them what is true and what is not through venues like the popular science corner and your website as well.”
Apart from the dishes that the PEAC staff had already cooked, there was one called colored rice, which they cooked at the gathering to show the cooking process. They did this because it is a traditional meal of Heier, where the Zhuang people's high quality sticky rice used at the event was grown. The guests were amazed by the beautiful color of the rice. Mrs. Duan also cooked a sticky rice pizza, a dish she created herself, at the location beforehand. Everyone was impressed by her fantastic work. After all these activities, a delicious meal was presented with chickens and vegetables cultivated by residents of Heinigou Village was presented.
These activities brought everyone at the event closer together. Everybody had a wonderful time celebrating Dragon Boat Festival, learned to cook sticky rice in more ways than one, had a delicious meal, and made friends. Many guests said they looked forward to taking part in more of our activities in the future.
